Conservation meets technology in innovative school project

Pest Management Youth Leader Madeline Bennett has turned her passion for Aotearoa’s native wildlife into a project she hopes will gain her a New Zealand Scholarship (NZS) in Technology.

The Rangitoto College Year 12 student has designed a soundboard that allows people to learn more about the birds found around the Long Bay area on Auckland’s North Shore.

“I have designed each bird, when pressed, to play an informative audio file and the bird call to help people relate their learning to real life,” Madeline says.

The product required coding, online 2D and CAD design, wooden construction, web design, and electronics skills, including coding an Arduino microcontroller.

Alongside the physical soundboard, Madeline has designed a website where people can learn more about the diverse native bird life of Aotearoa, their relationships to the local ecosystems, and how we can help protect these wonderful creatures.

Madeline hopes her interest in conservation will open up future pathways for study and work.

“I would love to study renewable energy systems or product design/user experience design with a sustainability focus.”
